Senior citizens from the Point Cook Village showed off their green thumbs at Werribee Park on Monday, as part of the annual Victorian Seniors Festival.

The festival, now in its 35th year, is a month-long celebration of the contributions which older people make to the community.

Parks Victoria ranger Adam Smith said the seniors’ visit to Werribee Park involved exercise, fun, education and a picnic lunch in the park’s farm area.

The seniors visited a community garden at the park – which is usually tended by volunteers – to learn about propagation and vegie growing.

They also received practical advice and learnt techniques for growing fruit at home while touring Werribee Park’s heritage orchard.

Horticulturalist Craig Castree ran a session to discuss and demonstrate hands-on edible food gardening for older people.

There are still a few events to be held in Wyndham as part of the Victorian Seniors Festival, supported by Wyndham council.

On Saturday, October 28, from 10am-noon, a free Family History Group meeting will be held at the Pacific Werribee Plaza Library in the family and local history room. RSVP at wyndham.vic.gov.au/libraries or by calling 8734 2600.

The Werribee District Historical Society will also host a free talk on the history of Wyndham, with afternoon tea from 2-4pm on Sunday, October 29 at the Old Shire Offices, 49 Watton Street, Werribee. RSVP is essential, call 0407 301 876 or email l_pritchard@optusnet.com.au for details.
