Second athletics site for Wyndham

Wyndham council is planning to build the municipality’s second major athletics facility at the Fortitude Drive Reserve in Truganina.

The reserve is also being designed to accommodate the anticipated future growth of field hockey in Wyndham.

Wyndham’s active city portfolio holder, Cr Peter Maynard, said the reserve would feature areas for activities such as barbeques and picnics, walking trails and a playground.

“These facilities will be a great social hub for the community and furthermore a great active space that will help residents stay fit and healthy both physically and mentally,” he said.

“We’re thrilled to be able to deliver on the demand that is increasing for field hockey and athletics and know that as our community grows, the uptake in athletics and hockey as a sport will grow too, particularly with the Tokyo Olympics just around the corner.”

Over the next four months, the council’s sport and recreation team will engage and consult with the community on plans for the site.

Cr Maynard said the council would like feedback from a wide range of community members on the proposed reserve development.

“We know that not everyone wants to participate in organised sport, so that’s why we’re asking residents who prefer other ways of being active what they’d like to see included in this space, so this reserve can be attractive and inviting for everyone,” he said.
