Secondary schools at Tarneit and Hoppers Crossing are in for a tight squeeze with limited places available to cater to the numbers of pupils graduating to secondary schools.
Data from Good Education Group, independent school consultants, shows if the 12,300 primary pupils in the 3029 postcode progress to existing secondary schools in the same area, the burden on secondary schooling will increase by 75 per cent.
There are currently 19 primary schools within the postcode, and 12 secondary schools.
Wyndham council’s education spokesman Cr Josh Gilligan said that, over the next 10 years, many new public schools will be needed in and around Tarneit.
He said three primary schools and a secondary school are needed just to help cater for students coming from Tarneit, Truganina, Mt Cottrell, Eynesbury and Quandong.
“More schools are required on all growth fronts, including burgeoning suburbs like Williams Landing,” Cr Gilligan said.
“Council has done research that highlights the required timing of new schools. This research has indicated that the delivery of schools is not keeping pace with the growth of our community,” he said. “More schools in Wyndham are a key priority for council.
“We have held regular meetings with the department of education and training to ensure that new schools are being planned for the parts of Wyndham that are growing fastest.”
A spokesman for state education minister James Merlino said the state government has invested more than $101 million into Wyndham schools.
“This huge injection of funds will see the delivery of a new primary school for Tarneit, as well as additional works to greatly expand several secondary colleges to service these growing communities,” he said.
Tarneit P-9 College and Tarneit Secondary College both received more than $10 million each in recent state budgets to underwrite significant expansions the schools have already planned.
