Saltwater College last week celebrated the uniqueness of its pupils for Harmony Day.
The day is dedicated to highlighting cultural diversity in Australia.
Performing arts director Michael Lapina said: “At Saltwater College, Harmony Day is every day.
“Our learning programs encourage our students to recognise the cultural tapestry of our school’s community, and through respectful, open-minded interactions with each other, they explore the diversity and beneficial potential that is achieved through cultures working together. “
Celebrations at the school included cultural dress up, a cultural lunch, multicultural games, rangoli drawings, class activities, and a henna activity.
Year 6 pupil Jakob said being able to understand and celebrate every culture was important.
“We are all one community and that makes each and every one of these cultures just as important as the rest,” he said
“We need to respect their beliefs because they are just as important as any other.”
Saltwater College staff encouraged pupils and their families to celebrate the week at home as well, with suggestions including creating a “who am I?” poster, playing music from different cultures, and watching a foreign film with subtitles.
