Alamanda K-9 College pupils have read thousands of books for this year’s Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge.
Teacher Allison Gatt, who is co-ordinating the Point Cook school’s participation in the annual reading event, said this year’s tally of books read stood – so far – at 9282.
Ms Gatt said 2414 prep to year 9 Alamanda students had enrolled to take part in this year’s challenge.
“Last year was our most successful year at Alamanda,” she said.
“We had 1361 students completing the challenge, with every student in Prep to year 2 finishing.
“It was also the first year that we had secondary students participating.
“We are looking at challenging ourselves again and achieving higher this year.”
Ms Gatt said reading was one of the most important fundamental skills for students to master.
“Reading a range of texts helps kids develop basic language skills and profoundly expand their vocabularies,” she said.
The Premiers’ Reading Challenge will finish on September 7.
