This time next week, these Wyndham students will be on their way to the happiest place on earth.
A school band made up of more than 20 students from Wyndham Central College and Hoppers Crossing Secondary College is headed to Disneyland in California to perform.
Wyndham Central year 9 student Jake Rasmussen said the band had a repertoire of 14 songs, mostly jazz and pop.
The combined band and its big adventure are the brainchild of Wyndham Central head of music Sue Butcher, who has worked hard over the past two years to make the tour happen.
“I’ve always wanted to do this, ever since I started as a graduate teacher 25 years ago,”
Ms Butcher said. “The kids that we have here now, they’re really good players and they’re really into music … I thought, now’s the time.”
Wyndham Central year 9 student Holly Darcy said students had to audition twice before making the cut.
“It was long and tiring – there were so many rehearsals for it,” she said. “It was so good to know that we finally got through. It’s going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
Band captain Roberto Lay, also from Wyndham Central, said the Disneyland show would be part of a jam-packed week-long schedule that would also include performances at Knotts Berry Farm and on the USS Midway aircraft carrier in San Diego, as well as workshops and sightseeing at Universal Studios and Hollywood.
