Two young Point Cook residents have been awarded scholarships to help with their university studies.

Yashwin Sudarshan and Kajal Soni will receive $15,000 undergraduate scholarships from the Westpac Scholars Trust.

The trust each year gives scholarships to high-school graduates who are passionate about technology and eager to explore its potential for good.

Ms Soni and Mr Sudarshan are studying at RMIT University. Ms Soni is undertaking a bachelor of software engineering and Mr Sudarshan is studying for a bachelor of computer science.

Mr Sudarshan said he was interested in how artificial intelligence and data science were integrated into everyday life.

“I’ve always been really interested in these two areas of technology – I’d like to focus on either of them in my career,” he said.

“I want to work in these two areas to improve the lives of people in Australia and, hopefully, overseas as well.”

Mr Sudarshan said that being a Westpac Scholars Trust scholarship recipient meant he had access to an “amazing network of people” among his fellow scholarship recipients.

Ms Soni said receiving the scholarship was “a great honour”.

She said that before applying for her university course, she was not sure which subject she wanted to study.

“However, I realised that technology would be the perfect career choice for me as it caters to every field out there,” she said.

“New innovations and ideas are always emerging from all areas – and the idea of being part of such evolution is what made me want to pursue a career in technology.”
