A tribute to a much-loved teacher is helping 15 students stay at school.
A scholarship scheme was set up in memory of Wyndham Community and Education Centre (WCEC) teacher Sandy Mein, who died unexpectedly on September 17 last year.
Mr Mein taught the centre’s re-engagement class for young people who had left school, as well as English-as-a-second-language classes for refugees.
The scholarship was set up with the support of his parents, Graeme and Margaret, after his students asked the centre to help them create a tribute to their teacher.
WCEC VCAL-VET training manager Teresa Vizintin said the “generous” fund was helping students facing hardship and barriers to education to complete training courses at the centre.
“Sandy Mein was an inspirational and well-respected teacher at Wyndham Community and Education Centre,” Ms Vizintin said.
“This legacy honours the great work undertaken by Sandy Mein.”
Sandy’s father, Graeme Mein, said the family had been very moved by the idea of setting up a scholarship fund and hoped students could make the most of the chances it offers.
“The nature of Sandy was to inspire others,” Mr Mein said.
“We hope this will encourage his students to keep learning.”
