Sarah Sherwood has been named Wyndham’s Young Person of the Month for her volunteerism, contribution to junior sports and unselfish dedication to the Tarneit community.

As vice president of the Good News Power Basketball Club, Ms Sherwood is involved in the mentoring of children and teenagers from multicultural backgrounds in the sporting arena.

Using basketball as a tool for meaningful social change, she helps others make lifelong friendships, stay healthy and get involved in whatever they are passionate about in life.

Her work on the court extends well beyond game day and training.

Last year, she helped her club secure a 2024 Australia Post Community Grant– which provides educational opportunities, mental healthcare training and accreditation to coaches and staff.

As she embarks on her teaching career, she aspires to make her students by inspiring them and supporting them to become the best people they can be in the classroom and beyond.

“I believe that everyone has the right to access a quality education and to lead their lives with purpose, promise and that anyone is able to achieve anything they put their mind to,” she said.”

“I want to make sure none of my students feel left out because of their background or who they are.”

Ms Sherwood said while she didn’t know what she did to deserve the recognition, it was a lovely surprise.

“I genuinely enjoy being involved in the community and getting to know the diverse people among us who enrich our lives.

“I hope such recognition may inspire just one other person to consider giving something a go, or similarly find a way to be involved and give back to others around them.”

Each month a Wyndham resident aged between 12–25 years is awarded young person of the month.
