A Wyndham-based company has launched a sanitising solution to the public which it claims is highly effective against the Human Coronavirus 229E.

PathoSans – part of Spraying Systems brand divisions – employs around 20 people at its Truganina office and warehouse, where the sanitiser is manufactured.

Product specialist, Michel Fernandes said PathoSans has been providing its sanitiser to the industrial market – such as food processing plants and beverage companies, which have strict biosecurity criteria – for years.

Mr Fernandes said that when the coronavirus pandemic hit Australia, the company decided to release the sanitiser for sale to the general public.

“We saw this as an amazing opportunity to provide our local community by enabling access and assisting the general public to achieve a higher level of hygiene at a crucial time,” he said.

He said that PathoSans sanitiser is composed of water and hypochlorous acid, which is the active ingredient.

“Hypochlorous acid works to oxidise protein, breaking it down,” Mr Fernandes said.

“As viruses protect their genetic material with layers of protein, the active ingredient is able to work against the virus wall, breaking down the protection barrier and inactivating it.

Viruses like SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, has a double layer of proteins, this is referred to as ‘enveloped’.

“Although enveloped viruses have an extra layer of protection, hypochlorous acid is still highly effective against them.

“For example, the white blood cells in human blood are responsible for fighting against infections in the human body – this is done by the hypochlorous acid the human body naturally produces, to inactivate bacteria and viruses through the phagocytoses process.”

Mr Fernandes said some tests conducted by external labs have shown the “great performance of hypochlorous acid on various enveloped viruses, including Human Coronavirus 229E, a surrogate for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19”.

Mr Fernandes said that while there are many types of sanitisers and disinfectants in the market, PathoSans is different because it is produced using simple raw materials.

He said that since the PathoSans sanitiser was launched to the general consumer market, the company has “had a very positive response”.
