Sanctuary Lakes residents have gone to State Parliament with their request to turn their estate into a suburb.
In two weeks, residents amassed more than 2400 signatures, petitioning the government and Wyndham council to recognise Sanctuary Lakes as a suburb in its own right, rather than being an estate within Point Cook.
The petition was presented to Altona MP Jill Hennessy last week and will be tabled in Parliament in coming days. Wyndham council also received a copy.
Sanctuary Lakes Resort Services chairman John Anderson said he was thrilled by how many signatures the petition garnered in a short time.
“Sanctuary Lakes residents have overwhelmingly supported the move,” Mr Anderson said, pointing out that the area’s population was expected to reach 12,000 within the next two years.
The council knocked back a similar request last October after Sanctuary Lakes residents asked it to write to the Office of Geographic Names to grant suburb status.
But Mr Anderson said he was confident the bid would be successful this time after Manor Lakes residents won their own long-standing battle to become a suburb earlier this year.
