Salvos tins ready to rattle

It’s time to gather up your loose change to help those in need.

The Salvos will come a-knocking later this month for the annual Red Shield Appeal, and Werribee branch captain Steven Holworth is calling on Wyndham residents to give generously.

Mr Holworth said volunteers would be out in force over the weekend of May 27-28, doorknocking local properties and tin rattling at a number of intersections and at Pacific Werribee, Coles Werribee, and Bunnings in Werribee and Hoppers Crossing.

The Red Shield Appeal is one of the Salvation Army’s biggest annual fundraisers, with proceeds raised going towards a range of community services. The Salvos help one million people every year.

Werribee Salvos run a community support office that offers food vouchers and other basic items from its Watton Street branch between Monday and Thursday, 9.30am-2pm.

The branch also runs a community lunch three times a week, and provides hot meals from a outreach bus at the front of Werribee train station on Friday nights.

“It’s important for us to donate as a community because there are so many needy people – they’re struggling, or homeless and have nowhere to go,” Mr Holworth said.

“If you see us on the weekend, come and say hi.”

Mr Holworth said the branch was also on the lookout for volunteers that would be happy to do some tin rattling over the weekend. For more information, call 9741 7359.
