Are you a nautical newbie, a Sunday sailor or a competitive yachtsmaster? Whatever floats your boat, yachtmaster and instructor Robert Bradley is keen to get more people out on the water and embracing the sailing life.
Mr Bradley has set up a sailing school at Wyndham Harbour and is offering cheap try sailing lessons to encourage Wyndham residents to use the area more. He also offers advanced training for those wanting to reach yachtmaster level.
Mr Bradley has refurbished three small yachts – Rose of Wyndham, James of Wyndham and Duck of Wyndham – he says are perfect introductions to sailing for individuals or families wanting to give sailing a try.
“I think the harbour is well-placed for sailing, particularly with the wind patterns that we get in Melbourne,” he said. “I see a whole lot of people in the area – around Point Cook, Laverton and the rest of Wyndham – that might like to take up sailing now that they’ve got a harbour in their own backyard.
“Once you get out on to the water and you can turn the engine off … it’s a bug you get. It’s quite relaxing.”
In 2013, Mr Bradley sailed to Japan in the Melbourne to Osaka double-handed yacht race, while at the weekend, two of his boats competed in the Sandringham Yacht Club’s Women in Sailing Challenge.
