Wyndham residents will soon be able to learn invaluable safety knowledge while simultaneously working up a sweat during a free four week self defense course at the Iramoo Community Centre.
The workshops, which begin in August, are aimed to forge a friendly and supportive environment for attendees to develop important skills, and learn avoidance, de-escalation, and how to escape from potentially dangerous situations.
Iramoo’s centre manager Renae Paul said the course was being provided to help the community feel safe when leaving their homes.
“It is important for people to be able to defend themselves and it allows people to recognise when/where self-defence is necessary,” Ms Paul said.
“Whenever we are faced with physical confrontation, we initially have the fight or flight response. We either fight to defend ourselves or flee and avoid fighting altogether.
“This series of free workshops will give community members confidence to protect themselves if they ever find themselves in a dangerous situation.”
Bookings are requires and classes will run on August 4, 11, 18 and 25 from 10.30-11.30am, a light lunch will be provided.
The workshop will be delivered by Martial Fitness Australia and is funded by the Department of Health.
“We hope the self defence classes encourage people to feel safe and confident in their daily lives,” Ms Paul said.
