Runners right for Wyndham Rotary Fun Run

These shoes are made for walking – and that’s just what Brian Hamer will do.

The 64-year-old Hoppers Crossing resident is gearing up for an eight-kilometre walk at the upcoming Wyndham Rotary Fun Run, and last week received a free pair of Mizumo runners from Athletes Foot at Pacific Werribee as an early entry spot prize.

Mr Hamer used to compete with the New South Wales Walking Club as a semi-professional walker, and in 1974 was 15 seconds shy of achieving the Australian qualifying time in a 20-kilometre walk.

These days, he walks five kilometres, five days a week, and takes part in a local park run every Saturday.

“I like walking for exercise, it keeps me fit.”

Mr Hamer is one of about 700 people due to pound the pavement for the 10th annual Wyndham Rotary Fun Run on March 5.

Runners can choose between a five-kilometre and 10-kilometre course, which start at Chirnside Park and wind along the Werribee River trail.

Those looking for a more leisurely outing can opt for four-kilometre or eight-kilometre routes. Children can dress up as a superhero for a novelty race.

The fun run is one of Wyndham Rotary’s biggest fundraisers, helping equip new the critical care unit at Werribee Mercy Hospital.
