If you think some of Wyndham’s roads are rubbish, you’d be right.
Wyndham council has resurfaced three main roads using a combination of recycled soft plastics, glass and other recyclables, sourcing the materials from across metropolitan Melbourne.
Dunnings Road in Point Cook, Haines Drive in Wyndham Vale and sections of Boundary Road between Derrimut Road and the Regional Rail bridge have been resurfaced using the equivalent of 705,000 plastic bags, 50,000 glass bottles, toner from 16,000 print cartridges, and 250 tonnes of reclaimed road asphalt.
Wyndham mayor Mia Shaw said using the recyclables to resurface roads was part of a trial to improve existing assets and reduce wastage.
“With our population growing at such a rapid rate, not only is our need for improved road infrastructure on the rise, but the amount of waste and recyclables coming out of households is also on the rise,” Cr Shaw said.
“Imagine a Wyndham where all our roads are upgraded using recyclables.
“Ten recycled bottles per household a week based on our population equates to about 2.5 million bottles – this could deliver 10,000 tonnes of asphalt for our local roads.”
