Wyndham’s vibrant and diverse community delved back into their roots in celebration of Harmony Day.
More than 10 multicultural ethnic groups congregated together at the Saltwater Community centre in Point Cook on March 19.
They shared traditional food, participated in cultural dances and music and wore cultural dress.
Wyndham Volunteers Association President Hasan Naim said he was “very proud” of the success of the event.
“Through this event, we have seen how beautiful one another’s cultures are. The vibrancy and beauty in each individual, which have been reflected through generations of traditions standing behind us, show how wonderful our different roots are,” he said.
“It is important to show our individuality in culture and traditions, as it is what helps us express our vision for our harmony day celebration.”
Just under half the residents living in Wyndham were born overseas, census data shows.
Mr Naim said it was his intention to create a culturally vibrant event that showcased the diversity of Wyndham and fostered a more united municipality.
“Diversity is the beauty of our society, it gives us an opportunity to learn about other cultures and an understanding of our differences,” Mr Naim said.
“Celebrating our differences, as well as our common interests, helps unite and educate us to build a better, healthier and harmonised community.”
The event drew in more than 200 attendees and was hosted by the Wyndham Volunteers Association, with funding from Wyndham Council.
