Every rhino has his day, and for southern white rhino Kapamba, that day was on Friday, when he received a special treat to celebrate World Rhino Day.
Kapamba is one of seven southern white rhinos that live at Werribee Open Range Zoo.
Earlier this year, Werribee Zoo keepers Kelly, Phoebe and Kirsten raised more than $7000 to support Rhino Fund Uganda, with the funds used to buy infrared monoculars and a range of large and small first-aid kits to protect rhinos in the wild.
The keepers will travel to Uganda next month to present the equipment to Rhino Fund Uganda and learn more about their efforts to reintroduce rhinos to Uganda.
White rhinos were driven to extinction in Uganda in the early 1980s, and across the rest of the African continent the survival of the species is under serious threat from illegal poaching due to the escalating demand for rhino horn.
