Reverse vending machines come to Wyndham

Recycling has never been more fun – or rewarding.

In a Victorian first, Wyndham residents can now deposit water bottles and drink cans in exchange for small incentives at three reverse vending machines in the city.

Wyndham council has set up the reverse-vending machines at AquaPulse, Eagle Stadium and the Point Cook Town Centre, with a fourth machine to be installed at a yet-to-be-determined location by the end of this year.

And even more are expected to pop up around the city for the three-year trial.

The machines allow people to insert empty bottles and cans in return for entries into major-prize draws, food and drink offers or, for the more virtuous, charity donations or good karma.

The move is one of many changes Wyndham council plans for coming years in a bid to divert 90 per cent of waste generated in the city away from landfill by 2040.

The new machines were emptied within a week of being installed.
