A Wyndham resident is calling on people in the municipality to stop partaking in “ludicrous” and “monumentally dangerous” behaviour.

Werribee resident Christine Hennigan said she often sees people on Watton Street performing illegal turns.

“They’re going over two unrboken lines from the left hand side, to park illegally on the right hand side of the road,” she said.

“When you do a reverse out of such a car park, you not supposed to be looking for someone behind you and somebody coming from across the road.”

Ms Hennigan said the situation was “quite horrific” and she had witnessed many near-misses.

“I remember coming out of coles and somebody has done one of those turns and somebody [else] has just stopped short of hitting them because they’re reversing the right way,” she said.

“They shouldn’t have to go through that stress, because [people] are doing the wrong thing, and no one is enforcing it.”

Ms Hennigan said many residents in the municipality seem to be under the impression the turns are legal, as they see other people partake in the behaviour.

A department of transport spokesperson confirmed double solid mid-lines should not be crossed, unless there is the need to avoid an obstacle or to leave sufficient passing distance when passing a bicycle rider, and only if it is safe to do so.

“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility – that means following the road rules at all times,” the spokesperson said.

“You can play your part by brushing up on your road safety knowledge through the Road Rules Education Online tool available on the VicRoads website.”

Some residents on Facebook have suggested Wyndham council installs a road divider along Watton Street to help deter motorists.

A spokesperson for Wyndham council said all traffic moving violations were a matter for Victoria Police.

“Wyndham City has no plans to install traffic separation devices in Watton Street,” the spokesperson said.
