Wyndham council has awarded a $14.9 million contract to begin work on new sports fields at two locations in Point Cook.
Major earthworks are expected to begin next month on sporting facilities in Bensonhurst Parade and Brookdale Road Reserve, after the contract was awarded to Joslyn Group Pty Ltd.
The projects will involve earthworks, installing automated irrigation systems that use recycled water, fencing, the construction of sports fields, energy-efficient LED sportsground lighting and landscaping at both reserves.
The sports fields at Bensonhurst Reserve will accommodate one senior cricket oval and four soccer fields, with additional works including the construction of tennis and multi-use courts.
The sports fields at Brookdale Road Reserve will include specialist baseball infrastructure, with works including a car park and play space.
Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said anyone living in Point Cook knows that the booming population in the area means the council constantly needs to provide more sporting facilities for local families.
“COVID and restrictions have put an even greater spotlight on the importance of local sports restrictions ease with increased vaccinations, these sporting facilities will play an integral part in the lives of many families moving forward,” Cr Hegedich said.
Wyndham’s active city portfolio holder, Cr Peter Maynard, said: “Wyndham city is committed to improving the sports and recreational assets across the municipality.
“Once complete, these major facilities will be capable of hosting junior and senior levels of competition and training for local sporting associations, clubs and schools.”
Work on the two reserves is expected to take 12 months.
