Hoppers Crossing sisters Banksia and Acacia are keeping busy reading during lockdown – along with their pet dog Rocky.

The siblings and their Jack Russell are among the many youngsters, both human and animal, who have been hitting the books recently.

Wyndham Libraries are holding a competition encouraging local families to send in a photo of young people aged 12 and under reading to their pet.

The Reading to Pets competition has been designed to help improve children’s literacy skills and self-confidence.

Images submitted to the competition will be published on Libraries in Wyndham Facebook page.

The family of the youngster whose photo attracts the most likes and reactions between August 2 and 8 will receive a Zoos Victoria gift card valued at $114.

Another photo, to be picked by the Wyndham Librarians and council officers, will receive a Robinson’s Bookshop gift voucher, valued at $50.

The winner of the Librarian’s Choice prize will be chosen based on the quality of the photo and the interaction between the child and animal.

If you wish to enter but you are uncomfortable sharing your child’s face, photos which show the back of a child’s head are welcome to be entered into the competition.

Photos must be submitted to Wyndham Libraries via Facebook Messenger at www.facebook.com/librariesinwyndham/ before 11.59pm on July 30. Include the entrant’s name and their age.

The competition is open to children whose parent or guardian lives, works, studies or socialises in Wyndham.
