There’s a saying that goes … you can’t really understand another person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.
These year 12 Thomas Carr College students will be doing just that this week when they eat the same rations that a Syrian refugee in Jordan might.
Alex Oaks, Austin Deppeler and Jasmin Mathews will swap their regular diets for small portions of rice, kidney beans, lentils, sardines, oil and flour as part of an Act for Peace Ration Challenge.
Along the way, they will be raising money to help pay for food, support and medicine for refugees.
Joining them in the attempt is school social justice co-ordinator Shirley Dagmang. “The idea of the challenge is to experience as closely as possible what it’s like to eat rations as a Syrian refugee in Jordan,” Ms Dagmang said. “I think it’s going to be quite challenging.
“We have a number of students at the college from refugee backgrounds and some whose families are still living overseas in very difficult circumstances. We’re hoping to highlight, in a creative and educational way, some of the many challenges refugees face.”
