Motorists travelling from Point Cook or Hoppers Crossing to Geelong will now be able to do so with relative ease following completion of the Sneydes Road diamond interchange.

Ramps on the Geelong side of Sneydes Road, connecting to the Princes Freeway, were officially opened on Friday. The Melbourne- bound lanes and the new Sneydes Road bridge were opened to traffic in May this year.

The $71 million project also includes new traffic lights at the Sneydes Road and Hoppers Lane intersection and a wider intersection with extra turning lanes and new pedestrian crossings to schools, medical centres and Hoppers Crossing train station. It also includes a shared user path across the bridge, connecting to the Federation Trail near Hoppers Lane.

Werribee MP and state Treasurer Tim Pallas opened the new ramps by ‘cutting the ribbon’.

“Today, I’m so happy, not as the treasurer but as the member for Werribee,” he said. “This is a spectacular piece of engineering.”

Mr Pallas thanked motorists for being patient while the road works were under way but said it was “all for a good cause”. The diamond interchange, he said, had created 100 jobs in the construction phase, which required 15,000 tonnes of earth to be moved, the pouring of 18,000 tonnes of concrete, and installation of 70 supporting beams for a bridge.

Mr Pallas said the new infrastructure would “unlock access to the future jobs hub of the East Werribee Employment Precinct”.

VicRoads executive director of major projects Andrew Williams thanked all involved in the project for delivering the interchange with minimal disruption.
