Some of the best race horses in the world will be based at Werribee from this weekend ahead of Melbourne’s Spring Racing Carnival.
This Saturday, the first 16 steeds arrive at the International Horse Centre, keen to emulate the success of former Melbourne Cup winners Americain and Dunaden.
Racing club general manager Glenn Scott said current Cup favourite Wicklow Brave, 2014 winner Protectionist, as well as Big Orange and Bondi Beach will be in the first group of arrivals.
Locals can watch the horses at morning track work from October 3, starting at 7am each day.
Mr Scott said Werribee Racing Club and the International Horse Centre will be the focus of racing industry interest over the next six weeks.
“It’s an exciting part of the year, and a great lead-in to our own racing season,” he said.
Werribee Racing Club cannot host race meetings between September and mid-November because of quarantine restrictions, with many international horses stabled at the quarantine centre.
The club will host seven race meetings this coming season, the first to be held on Tuesday, November 29.
Cup Day at Werribee this year will be on Sunday, December 11, following on from the success of the event being held in December last year.
