RAAF cadets at Point Cook will gain their wings under a new mentor in 2026, as Air Commodore Brett Williams takes command of Air Force Training Group (AFTG).
Air Commodore Williams was formally handed the reins from outgoing Air Commodore David Strong last month.
The ceremony included a flyover by the CAC Winjeel aircraft from 100 Squadron.
Deputy Commander AFTG, Group Captain Lloyd Sellick presided over the ceremony.
In his final address, Air Commodore Strong reflected on the significance of the occasion as he passed on the torch.
“Forty-one years ago, on 14 January 1985, I walked through the gates of the RAAF Academy at Point Cook as a young cadet,” he said.
“Today, I stand before you at the very same location, completing my final Air Force role as Commander Air Force Training Group.
“It is a moment that brings my journey full circle,” Air Commodore Strong said.
Air Commodore Williams accepted the AFTG Indigenous message stick from Air Commodore Strong in recognition of the connection between commanders and the passing of responsibility.
The new commander said he felt a sense of privilege in taking over the role and gave a nod to his predecessor.
“I am honoured to assume command of such a vital and respected organisation within the Air Force,” Air Commodore Williams said.
“First, I want to acknowledge the outgoing commander for his leadership. His contributions have strengthened the foundation upon which we now continue to build.”
Air Commodore Williams said the RAAF’s people are its greatest asset and that his goal was to train capable aviators and enhance national defence.
