With a week to go until the Queen’s Baton Relay passes through Werribee, baton bearer Lyn Tout is royally excited.
Ms Tout, who was nominated for the honour by her sister, will be the first person to carry the baton through the streets of Werribee next Tuesday, starting at Werribee Primary School.
The start point holds special significance for Ms Tout, who is a former student, teacher and principal at the school.
“That’s an honour, because I’ve had a long history with Werribee Primary School,” she said.
Werribee born and bred, Ms Tout is heavily involved in Wyndham community groups including Werribee Hockey, Hockey Victoria women’s masters and the Ulysses Club.
“Other people don’t understand that if you get out there and you give, you actually get more back,” she said. “It also keeps your mind active and it keeps you busy and all those sorts of things, as well.
“I’ve got a hockey family as well as my own family … that’s the relationships you build from your involvement.”
Ms Tout, who will dedicate her run to her late mother, Betty Rye, is among 11 Wyndham residents who will carry the Queen’s Baton. The others are Donald Brennan, Bianca Findlay, Margaret Fisk, Gerry Hart, Lauryn Mark, Genevieve Mercieca, Julie Toner, Gerald Greenwood, Catriona Tyrrell and Michael Wells.
The Queen’s Baton Relay will begin at 9.10am on Tuesday, February 13, at the front of Werribee Primary School and will finish at Chirnside Park just after 11am. For more information, go to gc2018.com/qbr
