A Point Cook cat rescue service will celebrate its first birthday in the most purrfect way on Saturday.
Purrs of Point Cook will throw a birthday fundraiser and adoption day at the Best Friends Pet Store, in Point Cook town centre, from 11am to 3pm.
Founder Leah Singh has been rescuing cats and kittens for nine years, but officially started Purrs of Point Cook when she took on a foster carer last year. She now has 45 foster carers on her books, mostly from Point Cook, and has re-housed 400 cats in the past year.
The not-for-profit organisation has also started fostering and re-homing cats and kittens from the Lost Dogs Home.
“I’m the type of person who can’t say no,” she said. “ Once I know a cat or a kitten needs rescuing, I’ll bend over backwards to take them on. It’s not that I love cats more than anything else, it’s just that they need the most help. Most of our rescues are not strays; they’re from people who don’t desex or microchip their cats so they have litters.”
Ms Singh said she couldn’t run the service without the help of foster co-ordinator Rebecca Roberts, adoption co-ordinator Rebecca Geeves and fundraising co-ordinator Kerryn Rozenburgs.
Purrs of Point Cook will have more than 20 cats and kittens to meet and adopt at this weekend’s birthday party. All the feline adoptees are vet-checked, vaccinated, wormed, flea-treated, microchipped and desexed before going to their new families, who are also screened. Adoption fees range from $50 to $200.
