A power-outage that left thousands of Wyndham residents without electricity on Thursday night and Friday morning, was caused by an unfortunate possum.

Just after 9.50pm on January 4 a fault occurred in the electricity network that sent just over 17,500 homes and businesses across Wyndham into complete darkness.

Electricity distributor for the area, Powercrop, said its maintenance crews identified a single possum as the cause of the outage, though wouldn’t say exactly how.

Residents commenting on social media said the outage was preceded by a loud bang, which Powercorp said was the likely outcome of the possum coming into contact with electricity infrastructure.

Miraculously the possum survived and was taken away to be cared for.

A spokesperson for Powercorp said its crews worked throughout the evening to progressively restore power and that all parts of Wyndham were reconnected by 3.30am.

“We know power outages are inconvenient and we thank everyone who was impacted for their patience as we worked as safely and as quickly as possible to get power back on,” the spokesperson said.
