Drivers breaking the law were met with increased police presence over the weekend, as local officers amped up patrols around Wyndham.

Operation Compass refers to a statewide road policing operation happening on the Easter and Anzac day long weekend.

Local inspector Darren Bentley said the aim was to provide “highly visible police activity” to reinforce positive driving behaviours and lessen the incidence of road trauma.

“Wyndham units will place focus on impaired driving, speed, fatigue, distraction offences and seatbelt compliance,” Inspector Darren Bentley said.

A total of 133 offences were recorded in the municipality between April 14 – April 18.

Police noted 35 speeding offences, 22 unlicensed/disqualified drivers, 21 unregistered vehicles and 15 instances of disobey signs/signals.

Other illegal activity recorded included mobile phone offences, drink and drug drivers and seatbelt offences.

Wyndham police services say they will continue to work with local stakeholders to achieve their vision of road safety and zero deaths and serious injuries.

“Our members continue to work tirelessly to ensure all the Wyndham community members and visitors to our area, enjoy the holiday period and remain safe on our roads,” Inspector Bentley said.

“We understand the significant impact that road trauma has on crash victims and families, so participating in these operations to prevent, enforce and to deter offending and prevent death and serious injury is an important part of the Wyndham police response to road policing over the holiday period.”
