A man in his 30s has been arrested after barricading himself and his two kids for more than three hours in a Tarneit property on Monday afternoon.
Police were called to the Winona Circuit address shortly after 1pm after a dispute between the man and another person.
The man, who was believed to be armed with a machete, barricaded himself and his two kids, both aged under 10, in the property until just after 4.30pm, when he gave himself up to police.
The man has been taken to hospital for assessment.
Uniform police, the Critical Incident Response Team, and State Emergency Service workers were on hand to block off Winona Circuit and surrounding streets during the siege.
Inspector Craig Peel the man and the person he was fighting with prior to the siege were known to each other, but could not confirm if it was a domestic dispute.
Inspector Peel said the man had not made any threats or demands during the stand-off.
“The information we had initially was that his behaviour was erratic… the police take all these matters seriously and we take every effort to resolve them peacefully via negotiation, and that’s what we’ve done today.
“The kids are good, they’ve understandly upset, but they’re in good health.
“This was an isolated matter, there was no threat to any person in the community.”
Inspector Peel said the offender was a local man, but could not confirm whether or not he lived in the property.
