Detective Senior Constable Drew Corry, of Wyndham Crime Investigation Unit, said details were sketchy.

Police were called to Rushford Lane, which runs between Watton and Synnot streets, early this morning following reports of blood being found on the road.

The laneway has been closed off as police continue investigations.

The assault is believed to have happened between 11pm and 1am.

Police said a man was admitted to Royal Melbourne Hospital with non life threatening injuries. No other details are available.

Police are reviewing CCTV footage from surrounding businesses.
