Police hit the streets for Operation Night Light

There’s been some dry nights on Wyndham roads – in more ways than one.

Westgate Highway Patrol members, general duties police and the dog squad took to Derrimut and Dohertys Road in Werribee between midnight and 3am on Thursday and Friday to stop and check more than 600 vehicles as part of Operation Night Light.

Police breath tested all 614 drivers and none of these tests returned a positive result, however, police did identify 19 other offences, including unlicensed driving, possession of drugs believed to be cannabis and GHB, seatbelt offences and speeding.

Acting Wyndham Inspector Peter Bitton said no matter the time of day, police were always actively patrolling the community and conducting operations to improve safety.

“We have significant police resources dedicated to the nighttime and early morning hours when we know offenders can be active,” he said.

“Our presence may understandably go unnoticed to the majority of the community who are asleep at home, but the community can be assured that our police members are disrupting crime and protecting the community around the clock.

“Police spoke to more than 600 people as part of Operation Night Light and it was pleasing to hear overwhelmingly positive feedback about the early morning police presence.”
