Justices of the Peace who volunteer at Wyndham’s police stations are among the busiest in the state.
Justices of the Peace – also known as JPs – authorise documents, including statutory declarations and affidavits. The JPs at Werribee and Wyndham North police stations signed nearly 95,000 documents in 2016.
JP Trish Vejby said both of Wyndham’s police stations were in need of more volunteer Justices of the Peace, who could donate an hour of their time each month.
Ms Vejby said only existing JPs, that is, those who have been officially appointed to the role, could apply.
Wyndham police Inspector Adrian Healy said volunteer JPs saved frontline police “hours and hours and hours of certifying and signing documents”.
“They [the JPs] are fantastic and we couldn’t operate in any sort of efficient manner without them,” Inspector Healy said.
“By having the JPs there, it frees up officers to attend other work more quickly.”
He said local police also had a “fantastic relationship” with the volunteer JPs.
