Wyndham police are going on the road this week to engage with the community.

Operation Engage will have police setting up at a Tarneit shopping centre, making themselves available for residents in need of help and advice.

Sergeant Tim Jacobs, of Wyndham North police, says the operation will run on Thursday and Friday, October 19-20, at Tarneit Gardens shopping centre.

“This operation will focus on making local police members available to the community,” Sergeant Jacobs said. “The operation moves members from being accessible only via a police station counter or patrol vehicle to being able to interact with their community.”

He said October was Victoria Police’s community engagement month.

“This operation will give our members the opportunity to demonstrate that commitment to the local community.”

The police members will be at the shopping centre from 11am on both days.

In March, Wyndham police’s community safety team doubled in strength. The team, which was formed in mid-2015 in a bid to curb crime and antisocial behaviour at public places, was assigned its own sergeant and an additional eight operational members.

The community safety team focuses on shopping centres and train stations across the police service area, through mobile and foot patrols. Constable Shaun Tait said at the time the team’s work was a proactive way of taking offenders off Wyndham streets.
