The 1st Point Cook Scout Group is getting closer to moving into its new headquarters, with a community grant helping it along the way.
Construction has started on the $1.6 million multi-purpose centre at Carranballac P-9 College’s Boardwalk Campus.
Once complete, it will be used as a Scout facility on nights and weekends, as a classroom and activity space during school hours, and for before and after school care. The project is being jointly funded by the Scout group and the state government.
Group leader Mark Coates said a recent $10,000 grant from Point Cook’s The Brook would go towards the internal fit-out of the new hall, including white goods and furniture.
Mr Coates said the group had long outgrown its current headquarters at the Jamieson Way Community Centre, with 146 kids on the books.
“Our group’s grown so dramatically … the demand is just too high for what we can offer out of that community hall,” he said.
“Moving into our own new dedicated hall means that we can expand the program further and bring kids in and run more activities. It’s really going to open up so much more opportunities for these kids.”
Mr Coates said the new facility would be named after the Scout group’s former group leader Brian Geary, who passed away last year.
The Point Cook Scout Group was one of a number of Wyndham sports clubs, community centres, schools and festivals to share in grants totalling $45,000 from The Brook.
Kirsty Baxter from The Brook said it was important for the organisation to give back to the community.
