Point Cook Road traffic investigated

Point Cook Road traffic flows are being put under the microscope.

VicRoads has conducted an online survey as part of a wider study to investigate ways to improve traffic flow and safety on Point Cook Road between Dunnings Road and Railway Avenue.

The survey, which asked participants about how VicRoads could improve safety for drivers, public transport users, cyclists and pedestrians, had received more than 2000 responses by the time it closed on Sunday.

In particular, survey participants were asked if they would support an alternative entry and exit ramp to the Princes Freeway that would avoid the need for drivers to go through the Aviation Road shopping centre.

More than 30,000 vehicles travel along that section of Point Cook Road each day to access the Princes Freeway; Aircraft, Laverton and Williams Landing train stations; the Aviation Road activity centre; and surrounding suburbs.

Although that stretch of Point Cook Road is officially in Hobsons Bay, it is a popular route for many Point Cook residents.

The survey results will be used to guide VicRoads in creating “a more functional and attractive transport network … for all road users”, its website says.

Last year, the RACV Redspot survey ranked Point Cook Road, between Sneydes Road and the Princes Freeway, as seventh on the list of the state’s 10 most congested roads.

It was the third year in a row the arterial made the top 10 list.

Wyndham council has previously identified as pressing the need to upgrade Point Cook Road between Dunnings and Sneydes roads.
