Werribee South residents are putting pressure on VicRoads to take action over a stretch of Duncans Road they says is “an accident waiting to happen”.
The section of the road between Whites and Beach roads has potholes and crumbling asphalt, and has no line markings or reflectors.
Annette Bugeja is one of more than 100 residents campaigning to have the road fixed.
“Do we need to wait for somebody to die on the road before anything is done?” she asked.
“It’s just not fit for purpose. We have the new marina coming up, so we’re going to have a massive increase in population but won’t have the infrastructure to match.
“This is the main road into Werribee, Point Cook and the freeway to Melbourne. It has me baffled.”
She said the danger increased at night as the road wasn’t wide enough to comfortably fit two “decent-sized” cars and there was a lack of space for drivers to pull over.
Council transport portfolio holder Glenn Goodfellow agreed the road needed to be upgraded.
“We are doing everything within our power to raise this issue with VicRoads,” he said. “VicRoads and the state government cannot continue to be the ostrich with its head in the sand – they need to come to the party.”
VicRoads metro north-west acting regional director Bryan Sherritt acknowledged the residents’ concerns.
“We have developed a proposal to resurface sections of Duncans Road from Beach to Whites roads, which will be considered for inclusion as part of a future works program,” he said.
“We carry out regular inspections on all arterial roads across Wyndham, including Duncans Road, to identify and repair any potential hazards and protect the safety of road users.”
