From umpiring to organising tournaments, Angela Broadbent is passionate about all things softball.
For her dedication to the sport, Ms Broadbent was presented with a Victorian Premier’s Volunteer Champions Award at Government House earlier this month.
The annual awards celebrate volunteers from across the state.
Ms Broadbent said that when she was a young adult playing for City Raiders Softball Club in Werribee, she was “very fortunate” to have “amazing mentors” who taught her the importance of giving back to the sport.
“I started playing when I was 10 years old and I haven’t missed a season since,” she said.
“From about the age of 14 I always took on a role in addition to playing, whether that was umpiring, scoring, coaching or committee work.”
Ms Broadbent gave up playing about five years ago, but since then she has remained a prolific volunteer.
“I do wear multiple hats … each season I become interested in different things,” she said.
She has spent nine years as a member of the Werribee Softball Association executive, organises the annual Werribee Memorial Shield tournament, is a member of Softball Victoria’s events committee and umpires games.
“With all the different things you do, you meet people from all walks of life,” she said.
