PETstock stores across the west will participate in a national microchipping initiative next month.
The annual Microchip Blitz will involve PETstock providing a $10 microchipping service.
The Microchip Blitz, run by PETstock’s charity foundation PETstock Assist, began four years ago in an effort to reduce the number of lost animals who need to be rehomed or euthanised if their owners cannot be found.
According to Animals Australia, an estimated 200,000 pets are euthanised at pounds across the country every year.
PETstock Assist charity and events co-ordinator Jess Guilfoyle said microchipping was mandatory in most states.
“However, thousands of pets still remain non-microchipped despite the introduction of new laws,” she said.
“Whether due to the usual cost of microchipping, lack of awareness on the laws, or owners not understanding how crucial microchips are to the safe return of lost pets.”
Pet owners must make a booking at their local PETstock store in order to participate in the Microchip Blitz.
Owners can bring in dogs, cats and small animals including rabbits and guinea pigs.
But horses, livestock, birds and reptiles will not be eligible.
PETstock Hoppers Crossing Microchip Blitz will be on Saturday, October 19.
