Peter’s pedalling raises $100,000 for Peter Mac

A Hoppers Crossing man has raised almost $100,000 for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre through a series of cycling events.

Peter Wood has been chalking up dollars and kilometres along with his team, Woody’s Warriors, who have been taking part in the annual 100-kilometre One Day to Conquer Cancer since 2012.

The 54-year-old and a friend have also been invited to ride in the three-day, 375-kilometre Tour de Cure – which starts in Geelong, goes to Barwon Heads and finishes at Peter Mac – next month.

Mr Wood says he and his team have raised about $97,000 in the past four years through sponsorships, and they’re keen to hit the $100,000 mark for the Tour de Cure.

“This all started when I turned 50 and thought life was passing me by and I took it on as a challenge,” he said.

“Different people over the years have joined me. I’m a pretty big bloke, and I think my fitness has improved over the last few years.

“I’ve never been a big cyclist … I’m pretty pleased with what we’ve raised; I’m a bit surprised we’ve got to that amount.

“All the rides we’ve done have been for Peter Mac.

“We hit up our family and friends for donations and I’ve had great local support from some of the service groups  … we’ve run trivia nights, done a Bunnings barbecue; there’s all sorts of opportunities for trying to raise the money.”
