Youth theatre group Wyndham Edge will perform a satirical adaptation of the Greek tragedy Antigone in Werribee this week.
The show, which has been retitled ‘TIG, portrays a parallel universe where people of colour have privilege and white people are the victims of racism.
Featuring film, live theatre and original tracks by Melbourne rapper Ror Akot, the concert’s cast consists of young performers from the Wyndham community.
Wyndham Edge, which is based in Hoppers Crossing, is run by Western Edge Youth Arts for residents aged between 16 and 25.
The script for ‘TIG is the work of emerging African-Australian playwright Betiel Beyin.
“Being part of a community theatre group that allowed me the opportunity to write a script entirely of my own experiences with race-related issues is amazing,” she said.
“The role reversals in the play clearly shows the division of race.”
‘TIG will premier at Night Waves, an event featuring young Wyndham artists, presented by Wyndham council and Western Edge Youth Arts, with the support of the Wyndham Community Cultural Foundation.
The event will start with a performance from music artist Josh Ephrams at 6.30pm, followed by ‘TIGS at 7pm, on Friday.
Night Waves will be held at Wyndham Cultural Centre, 177 Watton Street, Werribee, from 6.30-9.30pm. The night will finish with a performance from local dancers and hip hop artists.
