Wyndham council has conducted a preliminary investigation into the feasibility of implementing a park and ride service to local railway stations.
The service would be used “to alleviate parking pain in and around train stations in Wyndham” according to a post on the Wyndham City Living Facebook page.
The council is considering running a park and ride trial to Tarneit train station, using council roadsides and existing bus routes, which would allow commuters to park their car close to a bus stop.
The bus would take the commuters the rest of the way to Tarneit train station.
“This is a cost-effective solution that can be deployed relatively quickly when high parking demand returns once COVID-19 restrictions have been wound back and more commuters return to public transport,” the Facebook post said.
“This idea is still in its early days however Wyndham City is committed to taking the next steps to establish the park and ride trial, and this will include community consultation.
“This is one of a range of short and long-term scenarios that council is considering to reduce parking congestion in and around Wyndham.”
Wyndham mayor Josh Gilligan said Councillor Walter Villagonzalo had proposed the potential Tarrneit park and ride service.
“Council officers are working with local bus companies to make this a reality so that people can park along existing bus routes and catch a lift to their local train station,” Cr Gilligan said.
