A group of young Wyndham cheerleaders will be flick-flacking and arabesque-ing on their way to Hawaii later this year.

Wyndham locals Bronte Camilleri, Lucinda Laity, Mia Mallia, Olivia Bilton and twins Olivia and Julia Sieh are part of a team of 16 who will compete at the Global Dance and Cheer Games in Hawaii on June 11-12.

The girls, members of Southern Cross Cheerleading, qualified for the event after impressing judges at a try-out day, and are now training three times a week in preparation.

The group, which last year placed second at the Australian cheerleading championships, told Star Weekly they are excited to be taking part in their first international competition.

“I’m a bit nervous, too, because we haven’t been overseas to compete before,” Bronte, 11, said.

Julia, 12, said the team’s main aim for Hawaii was to ‘hit zero’; that is, achieve a perfect routine with no mistakes. Her twin, Olivia, said being sassy and performing sharp, clean movements were important in cheerleading.

“When you’re about to start performing, you’re nervous, but once the music starts and you get into the routine, you just enjoy it,” she said.

Lucinda, 14, added: “It’s a real adrenaline rush.”

The girls’ parents are running an online fundraiser and will host a trivia night at the Hoppers Crossing Football Club on March 19 to help fund the team’s travel and competition expenses.
