OAM honour for Shillar

Wyndham resident Shillar Sibanda has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for her service to the African community in Victoria.

The Queen’s Honours list recognises Australians who have demonstrated outstanding service or exceptional achievement.

Ms Sibanda, who works as a clinical coordinator, has been a registered nurse since 2006 and has worked as a psychiatric nurse at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, and a forensic psychiatrist nurse at St Vincent’s hospital.

Ms Sibanda has received other notable awards and recognition including the Preimier’s Volunteer Championship award, the Chairman’s Award from the Zimbabwe Achievers Awards Australia and Africa Day Australia’s Multicultural Award for Excellence.

The Point Cook local supports various community groups such as Unite to Fight Cancer for Peter MacCallum, Mother’s Day Classic for Breast Cancer and St Vincent’s fun run.

Ms Sibanda is a founding member of the Nelson Mandela Day Australia and a chairperson for Hand 2 Hand Sincedane Charity, which helps to rebuild schools in Zimbabwe.

She is also a committee member for the African Music and Cultural Festival and the African Australian Communities Leadership Forum.

Anyone can nominate any Australian for an award in the Order of Australia.
