Nursing a long career: Marg Daly

Marg Daly began working as a nurse at the Werribee Mercy Hospital when it opened 24 years ago.

She is now the associate nurse unit manager of the hospital’s emergency department.

Her role involves co-ordinating the flow of patients through the department, allocating beds, arranging transfers to other hospitals and doing the rosters for about 60 staff.

She also communicates with other medical workers to continue a patient’s care, working with doctors, nurses, environmental services, ward clerks, physiotherapists, care co-ordinators and other allied departments.

“I like interacting with people, I’ve got a natural desire to help people,” Ms Daly said.

“Each day is different in the emergency department, we see people at their most vulnerable, so it’s a very stressful environment.

“You just don’t know what’s going to come through the door and part of my role is to be prepared for that.”

Ms Daly said when she started working at the hospital, she knew each staff member.

She said that nowadays, while she still knows a lot of employees, it would be impossible to know each one by name because of the constantly growing workforce at Werribee Mercy.

“We have a great team, I love the team here,” she said.

Ms Daly said she enjoyed mentoring young staff who came to work at the hospital.

Werribee Mercy Hospital is undertaking a recruitment drive ahead of its $85 million redevelopment, due for completion later this year.

The hospital is searching for emergency nurses, mental health nurses and midwives.
