Nominations open for community awards

It’s easy to see why Julie Toner was named Wyndham council’s 2016 citizen of the year.

The Hoppers Crossing resident, who last week notched up her 29th consecutive year manning the phones at the Royal Children’s Hospital’s Good Friday Appeal, is also a tireless fundraiser for the Cancer Council and Bowel Cancer Australia.

Earlier this month, she helped raise just under $10,000 by taking part in the Wyndham Relay for Life team.

Also on the cards is a Karma Keg that will run at the Commercial Hotel on May 28, with all money raised going towards a bowel cancer support network in Victoria.

Then there’s the Mystery Night slated for July 21, which will be her major bowel cancer fundraiser for the year.

Ms Toner, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer two weeks after her 40th birthday, said she just wanted to give back to those who helped her. She is currently in remission.

“I’ve been supported by so many people, my passion for raising funding – especially for cancer – has been supported by my family and friends and I just find that so overwhelming,” she said.

Nominations are now open for the 2017 Wyndham council community awards, and Ms Toner called on residents to take the time to nominate a community hero.

Eight different awards are up for grabs, including the community engagement award, arts and tourism award, and the citizen of the year.
