No let-up in drink-drive operation

A police operation targeting alcohol and drug-impaired drivers in Wyndham has caught more than 300 offenders in the past two years.

Senior Sergeant Peter West, from the Werribee Police station, said Operation Speak Easy ran every six weeks or so.

He said that between August 2015 and June this year, officers had processed 308 people for 389 offences as part of the operation.

Senior Sergeant West said this included 54 motorists caught drink-driving and another 54 drug-impaired drivers.

He said the total also included seven people who had refused a breath test, 34 drivers caught speeding, 31 unlicensed drivers and 19 people driving while disqualified.

Senior Sergeant West said police conducted the latest Speak Easy operation between Friday, September 15 and Sunday, September 17, at four sites near licensed premises in Wyndham.

Across the three nights, police stopped and breath-tested more than 900 drivers.

They caught 39 people for 42 offences, including six motorists who were charged with drink-driving.

A 26-year-old Werribee woman, who returned a reading with a blood alcohol level of 0.12, had her car impounded and her license suspended immediately.

Senior Sergeant West said police saw a man driving around the streets of Werribee with no tyres on his car, just rims, about 10pm on September 16.

“He was driving around with sparks coming off his rims,” Senior Sergeant West said.

He said the 19-year-old Truganina man registered a blood alcohol reading of 0.128.

“On Saturday between 10pm and 5am, nine people were brought back to the station for drinking while driving, in a seven-hour period,” Senior Sergeant West said. “The fact we picked up nine people in seven hours is alarming.”

Senior Sergeant West said drink-driving operations would continue in Wyndham.

“If anyone is going to go to a licensed premises and they’re going to do something wrong, the chances are you will be intercepted by us,” he said.
