Mainstream education doesn’t suit all learners, especially those who prefer practical approaches over the theoretical.

For the practical types, Concern Australia (CA), a group founded by Dr John Smith – who also formed the Christian motorcycle club God Squad – is running a workshop at Sunshine providing hands-on training in a fully equipped mechanical and body repair workshop.

The workshop, dubbed Hand Brake Turn, is offering a nine-week certificate 2 course in automotive body repair technology. It comprises four and a half weeks of mechanical training, the remaining weeks for panel beating and car detailing.

The course is aimed at preparing participants for the workplace or further study.

There are now two such workshops, at Sunshine and Dandenong, with classes kept to 22 students to give them the best learning experience.

Panel beating and car detailing trainer Oscar Rosa, at the Sunshine workshop, said the pre-apprenticeship course was aimed at helping people 15 and older to find a job in the automotive industry.

He said that by engaging learners in teamwork, social and life skills, Hand Brake Turn was helping young people reach their full potential,
