A new primary school at Tarneit has officially been named by the state government.
Education minister Natalie Hutchins today (September 16) announced the name of the primary school is Karwan Primary School.
“It’s exciting to see Karwan Primary School has officially been named and is now another step closer to opening its doors to students next year, in one of Victoria’s fastest-growing areas,” Ms Hutchins said.
“The schools name builds its own distinct identity in the region, while also recognising the importance of Aboriginal histories and cultures.”
The school has been named after the Bunurong word Karwan, referring to the nankeen kestrel bird.
Consultation with the local traditional owner group was undertaken as part of the school naming process.
The state government said Karwan Primary School will cater for more than 500 students from years Prep to Grade 6 students.
“Karwan Primary School will provide a huge benefit to Tarneit – and it’s great to see it officially named before the 2023 school year starts,” Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly said.
